The Glasgow Girls were a group of women artists and designers active in Scotland in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. They were associated with the Glasgow School of Art and played a key role in the Glasgow Style, a distinctive branch of Art Nouveau.
Unlike their male counterparts, the Glasgow Boys, the Glasgow Girls were long overlooked in art history, but their contributions were significant. They worked across various disciplines, including painting, illustration, embroidery, and metalwork.
Some notable members include:
• Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh – painter and designer, wife of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, known for her ethereal, symbolic compositions.
• Frances Macdonald – Margaret’s sister, also a painter and designer, known for her mystical and allegorical works.
• Jessie M. King – illustrator and book designer, famous for her fairy-tale-like drawings.
• Annie French – illustrator, influenced by Pre-Raphaelite and Art Nouveau styles.
Their work was influential in shaping modern Scottish art and design, and today they are celebrated for their innovation and artistry.
