Scatness Bear Earrings

The Scatness Bear is a unique stone carving discovered during excavations at the Old Scatness Broch and Village in Shetland. This incised depiction of a bear is particularly intriguing, given that there is no evidence of bears ever having inhabited Shetland.

The carving is believed to date from the 7th–8th centuries AD, placing it within the Pictish period.  Its exact purpose remains uncertain, with theories ranging from it being a decorative element to having symbolic or cultural significance.
