Kishie Carrier Charm

A Shetland kishie is a traditional basket made from straw, specifically oat straw, and used in the Shetland Islands for carrying various goods. It has a distinctive square or slightly rounded shape with an open top and a pair of handles or a strap to be worn on the back.

Kishies were historically used for tasks such as carrying peat, animal feed, or harvested crops. The weaving technique used to make them is simple but sturdy, allowing the baskets to be both lightweight and durable. They were an essential part of daily life in rural Shetland before modern containers became common.

kishie carrier refers to the method or apparatus for carrying a kishie, often a strap worn over the shoulders to help distribute weight when transporting heavy loads. Some designs allowed the kishie to be carried like a backpack, making it easier to move across rough terrain.

Each piece of jewellery is made in our own workshop in the Shetland Isles and carries a lifetime guarantee.
